Electric car charging cost

Electric Car Charging Cost Calculator

Estimate the cost to charge an electric car in the UK from one battery percentage to another using battery size, your price per kWh and a charging loss allowance.

Formula: cost = battery size x charge added x charging loss factor x electricity unit rate.

Choose the currency that matches the prices you enter. SaveWatt formats your result but does not convert exchange rates.

What counts as a full charge?

Most drivers do not charge from 0% to 100% every time. A 20% to 80% charge is common for day-to-day planning and battery care.

Home charging vs public charging

Home tariffs are often lower than rapid charging prices, but public charging can still be useful for longer trips. Compare both prices using the same battery size and percentage change.

Why your bill may differ

Temperature, charger speed, battery conditioning and tariff timing can all affect the real cost, so treat this as a planning estimate.

EV charging FAQ

How do you calculate EV charging cost?

Multiply the kWh added to the battery by the electricity unit rate. The calculator also lets you add a charging loss percentage.

Why include charging losses?

Some energy is lost as heat and through charging equipment, so the electricity drawn from the wall can be higher than the energy stored in the battery.

Can I compare home and public charging?

Yes. Run the calculator once with your home tariff and again with the public charger price per kWh.

Does this work for a partial charge?

Yes. Enter the start and target battery percentages, such as 20% to 80%, to estimate the cost of a normal top-up.

How do I calculate the cost to charge an electric car?

Find the kWh added to the battery, add a charging loss allowance, then multiply by your price per kWh. For example, a 36 kWh top-up at 24.5p per kWh is about GBP 8.82 before losses.

Is home charging cheaper than public charging?

Often, yes. Home tariffs can be much cheaper than rapid chargers, so run the EV charge calculator with both rates to compare the same battery top-up.
